The Hofstra Gifted Academy (H.G.A.) is designed to enrich the lives of advanced students by expanding the scope of experiences provided by their school as well as to stimulate new creative interests in the students. Y1300: Reading Is Fun: Grades 1-2
Using a thematic approach to reading enrichment for the beginning reader, this program is designed for those who enjoy reading as well as those who need extra help. In-class instruction incorporates the use of vocabulary words, reading passages and language arts skills to enhance the progress of the new reader. Themes include a variety of stimulating experiences that make reading fun and meaningful. Through the use of manipulatives, stories, and auditory and visual experiences, ideas come alive and excite children about reading. Building solid reading skills is essential for all successful students. In this course students build on comprehension, fluency and decoding skills while increasing and expanding their vocabulary. This course is designed to meet the needs of emergent learners who require extra emphasis on writing skills. Students are motivated to write in a relaxed and supportive environment, using their everyday language and experiences. Imagination and creativity guide young writers to use developmentally appropriate spelling, organize their ideas and increase their awareness of punctuation. Y1420: Calling All Writers!: Grades 3-4
Students in this course learn amazing writing tips while they explore the power behind the writing process. This class is challenging while at the same time exciting and engaging for each student. The focus is on helping children find ideas for writing projects by using their imaginations. By brainstorming in class to identify their special project, they create plots and characters. Both fiction and nonfiction materials are utilized, as well as graphic organizers. This class will inspire students with a passion for writing to follow their dreams and show their creativity on paper! With the use of literature from all genres students will create writing pieces that have descriptive details, organization and sentence fluency and show their individual voice. This course is designed to help students develop their math problem solving abilities. In both small and large group settings, the most challenging topics of grades 5 and 6 are addressed: fractions, decimals, percents, mean, median, mode, probability, signed numbers and word problems, to name a few. Students are encouraged to ask questions and discover how math can be made easy once they acquire the skills taught in this course. During this course, students engage in activities that help develop their mathematical abilities, and topics that are commonly taught in grades 3 and 4 are covered. Possible topics include: place value, estimation/rounding, logic, properties of addition and multiplication, algebra, fractions, decimals, problem solving, geometry, exponents, statistics/probability, factors/multiples and more. In this age-appropriate, introductory course, children explore a variety of science topics through literature, poems, arts and crafts, hands-on activities, outdoor nature exploration and educational games. Activities are conducted each week that not only introduce major science concepts, but also teach general thinking skills such as patterns, shapes, colors, sequencing, sorting, graphing, measuring, comparing and observing - just to name a few! The amazing life of the earthworm, the undersea life of the squid, intriguing rocks and minerals, the excitement of the dinosaur - these and many other wonders of science are presented to our young future scientists through hands-on experiences. Science concepts are presented in fun-filled ways, motivating young minds toward future learning. Y3112: Applied Science: Grades 2-4
Students are encouraged to investigate basic scientific concepts using hands-on activities. Each class will be broken into two parts. The first half of class will be a lesson about the science behind the activity for the day. The second half of the class, the students will use their supplies to solve a problem. Possible course topics include DNA, temperature, and currents. Scientific method, effects of pollution, animal adaptation, and engineering concepts may also be discussed. Instructor will provide a list of household materials needed prior to each class.
Y3113: Young Inventors at Work: Grades 3-4
Students learn what it takes to solve a seemingly overwhelming problem using only their wits, creativity, and ability to put the pieces together. In this hands-on workshop, students combine observation with a newfound familiarity with the scientific method to discover the inventor within. Each class will be broken into two parts. The first half of class will be a lesson about the science behind the activity for the day. The second half of the class, the students will use their supplies to solve a problem. They learn to create a flotation device that can save lives, devise a bridge that can withstand crushing under its own weight, and maybe even build a plane that may travel the distance of a football field! There are no limits to what an inventive mind can conceive. Instructor will provide a list of household materials needed prior to each class.
Y4031: GBA: 3D Printing and Animation: Grades 5-12
This specialty course will have students diving head first into the exciting world of 3D modeling and animation, with the fantastic addition of 3D printing! Students will have an incredibly fun experience creating their own 3D art, including 3D characters, environments and animations – with no prior drawing or art experience required – and will bring their creations into the real world using cutting edge 3D printers! Whether you’ve seen it in video games, at the movies, or on TV, 3D animation is everywhere, and students will be breaking into the industry using state-of-the-art software, MAXON’s Cinema 4D – the same software used by professionals to create many of the animated films you see in the movies! Have you always wanted to try your skill at "dueling," but didn't know where to begin? Well, en garde! This course introduces you to the art of swordplay in a safe, progressive manner. Taught by a University fencing instructor and coach, learn how to advance, retreat and lunge, along with various attacks and parries. This class is for children who are new to swimming. In groups of 2 or 3, swimmers learn water initiation as well as how to feel comfortable in the water. They are introduced to elementary aquatic skills, including floating and locomotion. As students progress, they are taught the fundamentals of the beginner stroke. Minimum 4 years of age; birth certificate required. Y8440: Hofstra Junior Swim Club
This course provides swim practice and instruction for students who aspire to be competitive swimmers. An experienced swim coach paces the youngsters as though they are on a swim team. Each session includes practice and instruction in all strokes, coupled with lap swimming, the racing dive and competitive turns for each stroke. Prerequisite: Students should be able to maintain basic strokes for at least 2 laps or 50 yards. Limited enrollment; register early! Learn what it takes to become a lifeguard on Long Island - a great summer job for qualified teens! This course is for those students interested in eventually becoming lifeguards or who just want to train without competing. Strengthen your endurance through lap swimming and interval training while you learn necessary lifeguarding skills. Note: You may be eligible for the Saturday Classes for Young People Early Registration Discount program.
