This course is the sequel to Preschoolers Prepare to Read! - Part II, and focuses on the needs of students who are in kindergarten and want to continue expanding their skills before they begin first grade. Using a thematic approach to reading enrichment for the beginning reader, this program is designed for those who enjoy reading as well as those who need extra help. In-class instruction incorporates the use of vocabulary words, reading passages and language arts skills to enhance the progress of the new reader. Themes include a variety of stimulating experiences that make reading fun and meaningful. Through the use of manipulatives, stories, and auditory and visual experiences, ideas come alive and excite children about reading. This course is designed to assist students in expanding their comprehension skills and utilize them as they become reading detectives. Students will get engaged in close readings to analyze text. Through hands-on activities they will find evidence to support their answers. Y1315: Readers' Theatre: Grades 2-5
Readers’ theatre is a highly motivating literacy strategy which allows the reader to absorb into the literacy experience and become a star. The class connects oral reading, literature, drama, vocabulary, auditory, visual, and kinetic components. Students reflect on material; use their voice, expressions and interpretations; increase comprehension; develop public speaking skills; and learn to make connections to the character as well as real-life connections. This class provides an opportunity for students to develop critical, lifelong communication skills as they integrate the multiple intelligences. Readers’ theatre is an opportunity for students of varied reading abilities to increase confidence, fluency and automaticity. Students interpret dialogue and communicate meaning, increasing awareness and appreciation of plays as a form of literature. Building solid reading skills is essential for all successful students. In this course students build on comprehension, fluency and decoding skills while increasing and expanding their vocabulary. Y1410: Beginning To Write: Grades 1-2
This course is designed to meet the needs of emergent learners who require extra emphasis on writing skills. Students are motivated to write in a relaxed and supportive environment, using their everyday language and experiences. Imagination and creativity guide young writers to use developmentally appropriate spelling, organize their ideas and increase their awareness of punctuation. Students use the different phases of the writing process: pre-writing, revision and editing, and learn to see themselves as authors and their work as literature. Y1412: English Grammar and Composition: Grades 6-8
Concentrating on grammar, punctuation, paragraphs, development of ideas and sentence structure, students use templates and visual aids to improve their writing skills. This process enables writers to successfully complete paragraphs and essays. Moreover, students can then transfer the knowledge gained from this course to their individual school settings. The best way to become a better writer is to practice, practice, practice. Students complete weekly writing assignments while learning how to convey ideas quickly, clearly, and persuasively. Y1416: Assessment Writing: Grades 9-12
This course is geared to prepare students for Assessment (Regents/AP/SAT) Essays: Thematic, Document Based Questions (DBQ), and Critical Lens. The students will examine the best ways to organize, interpret and analyze both the information given and student content knowledge to aid student development in creating a cohesive final essay. The class will work on structure and layout by outlining and drafting before the final essay is written. This is a great course for any student preparing to take/re-take any examination.
Y1420: Calling All Writers!: Grades 3-4
Students in this course learn amazing writing tips while they explore the power behind the writing process. This class is challenging while at the same time exciting and engaging for each student. The focus is on helping children find ideas for writing projects by using their imaginations. By brainstorming in class to identify their special project, they create plots and characters. Both fiction and nonfiction materials are utilized, as well as graphic organizers. By the end of the session, students begin to think of themselves as authors with the experience of taking a story idea to its finished product - their own book. This class will inspire students with a passion for writing to follow their dreams and show their creativity on paper! With the use of literature from all genres students will create writing pieces that have descriptive details, organization and sentence fluency and show their individual voice. Works such as original short stories, poems and narrative essays and skits will be created in order to build your students writing portfolio. This course invites young authors to challenge themselves as they enter the exciting world of literature. Students learn the basic fundamentals of literacy genres across the board,such as fiction, poetry, science fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, memoirs, short stories, fairy tales, fantasy, and drama. With the infusion of NYS Regents-based literacy elements and language skills, students celebrate creativity and individuality. The foundations of reading need to be developed and reinforced in order to achieve and maintain a successful school career. Critical thinking helps us understand ourselves and the world around us. We may use our critical thinking skills in a wide range of situations, from achieving our personal goals to identifying and correcting problems on a national or global scale. Effective thinking involves close attention to detail, an ability to stand back from a situation, a weighing of pros and cons, and ultimately a willingness to make decisions based on information that has been collected and to take responsibility for those decisions. In our society, the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening are essential to critical thinking, and the exchange of ideas with others is a crucial component of critical thinking. The amazing life of the earthworm, the undersea life of the squid, intriguing rocks and minerals, the excitement of the dinosaur - these and many other wonders of science are presented to our young future scientists through hands-on experiences. Science concepts are presented in fun-filled ways, motivating young minds toward future learning. Y3112: Applied Science: Grades 2-4
Students are encouraged to investigate basic scientific concepts using hands-on activities. Each class will be broken into two parts. The first half of class will be a lesson about the science behind the activity for the day. The second half of the class, the students will use their supplies to solve a problem. Possible course topics include DNA, temperature, and currents. Scientific method, effects of pollution, animal adaptation, and engineering concepts may also be discussed. Instructor will provide a list of household materials needed prior to each class.
Y3113: Young Inventors at Work: Grades 3-4
Students learn what it takes to solve a seemingly overwhelming problem using only their wits, creativity, and ability to put the pieces together. In this hands-on workshop, students combine observation with a newfound familiarity with the scientific method to discover the inventor within. Each class will be broken into two parts. The first half of class will be a lesson about the science behind the activity for the day. The second half of the class, the students will use their supplies to solve a problem. They learn to create a flotation device that can save lives, devise a bridge that can withstand crushing under its own weight, and maybe even build a plane that may travel the distance of a football field! There are no limits to what an inventive mind can conceive. Instructor will provide a list of household materials needed prior to each class.

In this course, students will begin their journey as the future builders and creators of the 21st century as they learn the fundamentals, the fun, and frustration of engineering design. Students will build something new each class and learn the importance of testing and evaluating their original design as they take thoughtful steps to improve their design through the process of iteration. In this course, students will also learn how to refine their cooperative, evaluative, design, creative, and presentation skills as they move through the weekly projects. Y4082: GBA: Roblox Creators Club: Grades 2-6
This course is offered online via ZOOM and takes place during the below dates and times. You will receive information about how to access the ZOOM room upon registering for the class. Create and publish your own Roblox games! This course for all Roblox fans will level up students from players to creators! Using the incredible developer tools in Roblox Studio, students will design their own vast 3D game worlds with customized interactive objects, realistic special effects, amazing physics systems, and much more! In addition, with Roblox Studio’s LUA programming language, students will use coding to customize their games to new heights! Y5355: Portfolio Development and Personal Vision: Grades 9-12
This class instructs students in the process of creating a coherent portfolio that reflects their own personal vision. Instruction is given in the process of taking an original idea from rough sketch to finished piece using a number of different mediums such as pencil, pen and ink, pastels, color pencils, markers, watercolor and acrylic painting. The class also emphasizes basic concepts like anatomy and composition. Students are encouraged to experiment with ideas and mediums in an effort to help them fulfill their artistic goals. Students with a passion for cartooning this class is for you! With step-by-step instructions, participants learn to draw some of today's most popular characters while they are introduced to perspective and the proper way to ink and color their work. In this course, students will learn and develop the skills necessary for public speaking while working to develop strong debate tactics. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their speeches through writing and practice the delivery of their messages through oral presentations in class. Students will be asked to customize their speeches to different audiences to enhance proper delivery styles. Class will work individually, and in teams to practice group debating skills. They will develop the self-confidence needed to fluently deliver and argue their ideas and effectively counter-argue their debate opponents in the future. This course will allow students to set and reach personal goals to confidently express themselves verbally and dynamically. This course has been approved by Girl Scouts of Nassau County.
